| The city of Center,
Texas, got its name because it is the "center"
of Shelby County. Center hosts two festivals
each year, the What-A-Melon Festival which
is held in July and the Poultry Festival which
is held the first full weekend in October.
There are many historical sites in town which
include a museum, our old jail building, built
in 1884, and the Shelby County courthouse
which was built in 1885 by John Joseph Emmett
Gibson. The courthouse was designed as an
Irish castle. The old county jail, also built
by Mr. Gibson, is now used as a Visitors Center.
The Sheriff's Posse Rodeo is held at the Shelby
County Expo Center every year in June.
