Created in 1846, Upshur County has a rich history and an equally brilliant future. With Gilmer, the country seat, located in the center, year-round activities and attractions radiate throughout the county. Located between Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana just north of I-20, Upshur County is a magnificent blend of the Texas Mystique, deep southern charm and the rolling hills of pine and hardwood forests reminiscent of the Ozarks.

The Upshur County Library and the Historic Upshur Museum provide a wealth of information. Over 35 official state historical markers, restored early Texas homes, numerous community cemeteries, and the Cherokee Trace, blazed by Indians, make Upshur County a living history lesson.

Restoration of Gilmer's historic downtown area has resulted in its being designated a State and National Main Street City.

Each May, Upshur county celebrates Cherokee Indian heritage with the Cherokee Rose Festival. The East Texas Yamboree, held each October since 1935, and nationally known as the biggest homecoming in Texas, entertains more than 100,000 people. Christmas season is brought in the first Saturday in December with the Yulefest celebration and Santa Claus parade. There is a 76-space RV park at the Yamboree grounds.

Gilmer is proud of the new 5800-sq. ft. banquet/concert arena, Gilmer Civic Center, as well as our newly completed 870-acre Lake Gilmer on Cherokee Trace.
